“But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.” – Acts 7:55
We learn from Stephen the cost of living for Jesus... and that, sometimes, making the difficult decisions of turning away from what our culture seems to so easily embrace as acceptable, can make us feel separated, even isolated, from those around us. Imagine how Stephen felt. And yet, despite the fear, even terror, he probably experienced when the yelling started, he refused to look away. Keeping his eyes and his heart focused on Jesus, Stephen readily accepted his fate—to the point of echoing Jesus’ words and asking that his tormenters be forgiven—and truly lived out what it means to be reanimated for selfless giving. If only we might be as strong. If only we might be as focused. If only we might be as determined to share with others the love of Jesus, no matter the cost, risk, or sacrifice. And through the power of his Spirit, we can. Thanks be to God!
Prayer: Lord Jesus, You took Your last breath on the cross to give us life. Strengthen us to live our lives for You so that You can use us to help others grow in their faith. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen.
